Dear Columbia School District Patrons, Staff, Parents, Guardians and Students,

In an increasingly digital world, excellence in education requires that technology be seamlessly integrated throughout the educational program, and as a result, increasing access to technology is essential. Technology is changing so rapidly, that we simply cannot predict the future for many of our youngest students for the simple fact that some of the positions or careers our students will choose from have simply not been invented yet. In order for our students to compete in a global marketplace, our students must become savvy consumers of the technology driven world around us. One learning tool of 21st Century students is the use of Chromebooks. Individual use of Chromebooks is a way to empower students to maximize their full potential and to prepare them for college, careers, and life.

Today I want to provide some more insight into a change you will no doubt hear about this next year. Beginning in August 2019, the district will take our next step in implementing a multi-year plan outlined to get technology in the hands of our students on a daily basis.

This past year, your school district created a 1:1 (one computer-to-one student) technology initiative and the first set of computers will be issued to the high school students this fall. Students at CHS will be taking their devices home as part of this initiative to connect and enhance the learning experience. This is an exciting time to be a Coyote! The focus of the one-to-one (1:1) Chromebook Initiative at Columbia School District is to provide tools and resources to the 21st Century Learner. Other districts in our area are moving toward a 1:1 initiative, but few schools of our size are as far along as we are.

Additional information concerning program details can be found above on this page or call the district office at (509)547-2136 with any questions.

Finally, let me say “thank you” to our community and voters for passing a Technology Levy early in 2018. Your support and commitment to our students helped build the foundation for the revised technology plan. Again, it is a great time to be a Coyote! I look forward to seeing you all back at school later this month. Until then, enjoy your last few days of summer and Go Coyotes!
