Attention parents/guardians of CSD students:
Is the snow driving you crazy in the middle of March? Are you ready for some fun in the sun? Sorry, there's not much I can do to help you with the first two, but if you are looking for answers to what all this snow chaos and cancelled school days means for our district calendar, you've come to the right place! Here's an official update on our district calendar for the remainder of the school year. Unfortunately, we have six days to make up due to school closures (2/11/19 - 2/15/19 & 2/26). We have one "Make up Snow Day" on May 24th built into our 2018-19 District Calendar so we will now be going to school on Friday, May 24th. The additional five days of school will be made up in June. We will now be finishing school the week of June 10-14th, with our last day of school being set for Friday, June 14th (early release).
Some of you might be asking, "I have heard in the news about schools applying for snow waiver days. What is this and why are we not doing this?" First, a waiver day request is an application made on behalf of the school district requesting that OSPI (Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction) waive, or allow, a school to not make up days missed. In order to qualify to waive a school day due to weather, districts have to meet several conditions. These items include the total number of days cancelled by the district, average number of required instructional minutes, as well as how many days the district made up prior to asking for a waiver. In the end, CSD will not be applying for any snow waiver days this year.
Finally, this brings us to our final district calendar decision surrounding our Seniors and the graduation commencement date. The CSD High School Graduation date will not be changed. We will continue as planned with graduation on Friday, May 31st. Washington State law (RCW 28A.150.220) requires our Senior class to make up the five days the rest of the student body will be making up the week of June 10-14th, as we will not be asking our Seniors to come back to school after graduation. Mr. Miller sent out a letter to our Coyote Seniors and parents on March 12, 2019 communicating information on senior make up days. If you are in need of additional information on specific dates and times, please contact the Columbia High School office for additional information, or check our website at www.csd400.org
I hope this answers all your calendar questions. If you have any other questions, please contact the Columbia School District office at 547-2136.
